PCOS Study

Study Title

A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Double Blind Trial of Liraglutide 3mg [Saxenda] on Weight, Body Composition, Hormonal and Metabolic Parameters in Obese Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Study Description

Obesity plays a central role in the development of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and exacerbates reproductive and metabolic dysfunction. Evidence suggests that medical treatment using drugs that manage obesity may modify the physiological and behavioral processes that contribute to weight gain and hinder weight loss.

The PCOS weight loss study is looking to see if the FDA-approved weight loss drug Saxenda is effective in reducing body weight and excessive male hormones in obese women with PCOS.

Goals of the Study

The goals of the study are to determine how Saxenda® treatment impacts:

  • Body weight
  • Free androgen levels
  • Menstrual cyclicity
  • Glucose regulation
  • Insulin sensitivity and secretion
  • Body composition
  • Cardiometabolic markers (lipids, blood pressure)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Female
  • Age 18-45
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of greater than 30
  • Diagnosed with PCOS by hyperandrogenism (elevated male hormone or excess facial hair) and irregular menstrual cyclicity (less than 8 cycles/year)
  • Non-diabetic
  • Willing to use effective non-hormonal contraception consistently for the study duration

Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to the study drug or placebo in a 2:1 ratio (2 study drug:1 placebo)

  • Any hepatic (liver) disease
  • Eating disorder
  • Renal (Kidney) Impairment
  • Untreated thyroid disease
  • Elevated triglyceride levels over 400 (or extremely elevated levels)
  • Use of hormonal medications
  • Active or prior history of substance abuse
  • Previous bariatric surgery or device intervention for obesity

Other criteria may apply.

Medication, office visits, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans, lab tests and compensation (patient stipend) are provided.
